History Group
The Tolpuddle Old Chapel Trust History Group grew out of the Tolpuddle Family Lives project, a Historic England-funded programme exploring the lives, experiences and stories of people who lived and worked in and around Tolpuddle. The project encouraged local people to share memories, research family histories and uncover the often-overlooked stories of ordinary lives that form such an important part of our heritage.
During the project, a small and enthusiastic group began meeting together as a history club. The sessions provided a welcoming space for people to explore local history, exchange knowledge, discuss sources and develop new ideas for researching the past. The success and enthusiasm generated by the club led to its continuation beyond the project, and it has now become an established TOCT Group.
The History Group continues the spirit of Tolpuddle Family Lives by bringing people together to investigate, share and celebrate the history of Tolpuddle and the surrounding area. From the stories of families and working people to the wider social, agricultural and community history of Dorset, the group aims to help uncover the many layers of the past that connect people and place.
Meeting at Tolpuddle Old Chapel, a building with its own remarkable history as a former Methodist chapel connected with the Tolpuddle Martyrs, the group reflects the Trust’s wider aim of making the Chapel a living place for heritage, learning and community activity.
The History Group welcomes anyone with an interest in local history, whether you are an experienced researcher or simply curious about the stories of the people and places around us.
