The story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs is one of the defining moments in the global fight for workers’ rights and justice. In 1834, six farm labourers from the small Dorset village of Tolpuddle unintentionally sparked an international movement that reshaped history. Their “crime” was forming a friendly society to protest against starvation wages. Arrested, tried on a trumped‑up charge and transported to Australia, their courage triggered worldwide outrage. Tens of thousands marched through London, petitions flooded Parliament, and newspapers across the globe condemned the injustice. The Martyrs became powerful international symbols of resistance, proving that ordinary working people could challenge authority and change the world. 

Tolpuddle Old Chapel is a surviving material link to these remarkable men. Built in 1818 by the Standfield and Loveless families and local Dorset Methodists, it is one of only two surviving cob‑built Methodist chapels in the UK. Recently restored, it stands as a rare witness to the birth of a movement that inspired modern trade unionism across Britain and far beyond. During Heritage Open Days, visitors can enjoy the restored Chapel and explore a special exhibition on the persecution of early Methodism, including the dramatic events of its 1818 opening service, when worshippers were attacked by a hostile mob. The exhibition also features a full‑scale replica of the original 1818 Deeds, signed by George Loveless and Thomas Standfield.
